About the Site

Hi, I'm your host Fuzzy Gerdes. My family moved around quite a bit when I was a kid, so when I hit 11 years of living in Chicago in 2010, that was the longest I'd lived any one place and I decided to commemorate the occasion by getting a tattoo of the Chicago flag around my arm. Once I had the tattoo, I started noticing Chicago Flag* tattoos everywhere I went. Knowing that my story was not as simple as "I was born here and love the city"** I was curious whether other people had interesting stories behind their tattoos as well. And I'm pretty shy, so I thought I'd challenge myself to interview strangers. My first three interviews all revealed people who happy to talk about their tattoos, and wildly different stories behind them. So I thought there might be something to sharing those stories out with other people.

I'm very grateful that my wife Erica Reid will be helping with some of the interviews, because she's not shy at all (part of why I love her so).
* And other Chicago symbols like the Chicago Y.
** Not that that's a bad story.

Got something to tell us? Know someone we should interview? Email us at tats@chicagoflagtattoos.com to arrange an interview.

If you just want to send in a photo, we always love to know:

  • What is about Chicago that made you want to get your tattoo?
  • Where did you get it done?
  • May we use your full name on the site?
  • If possible, we'd love to see a photo of you and not just your tattoo. Check out some of the interviews on the site to see what we mean.
